Introduction of the Participants and baseline Evaluation

After the arrival of the Participants of Punjab Daanish Schools at Chand Bagh School, the first session with the participants conducted by the Trainers/facilitators was Introduction of the Participants and the Evaluation of their Presentation. The participants were made comfortable first, encouraged to socialize with each other within the Primary Group (the group belonged to the same location/station) and outside it with courtesy and empathy. Then each participant was asked to introduce him/herself and say few words on any of the given topic.

All the participants were rated on a scale of 0-5 for their style of presentation.

WRITING PATTERNS (SPECIMEN)

With the aim of testing the participants’ ability to produce a piece of continuous prose in accurate Standard English and to respond relevantly, a test was designed and given to the participants during this session. Particular emphasis was placed upon their ability to

VISION

This session started with the presentation which was analytically observed by all the participants. There were tweets in the whole presentation and participants were asked to draw inferences out of each slide. They started making assumptions about each scene. With the help of that presentation, all participants made certain deductions which are as follows;

· Looking at things from very far as well as from very close makes that thing out of focus. For a correct and true vision there should be a balance between the two (i.e. neither it should be too far nor should be very close).

· Never draw inferences of the situation by just looking at the indicators or smaller portion of the picture. It is very essential to comprehend the real situation by analyzing the wider picture.

· Reinforcement or recurrent visits of the contents/things is vital in enhancing the vision.

In this thought-provoking manner, the future teachers were made cognizant of the concept of vision so that they would be able to apply this lesson in their practical life henceforth.

All the participants were enlightened with the essence of a very vital activity i.e. Note taking. It exceptionally helps a teacher for various purposes, like report writing, preparing lectures and lessons, in a meeting etc.

A unique Cornell Note taking style/process was introduced to the participants; a teacher can recall all the points of a specific topic at a glance.

Elaborations on Daily Routines

The session started with Headmasters’ explanation on daily routines of a Residential school. He elucidated the role of a boarding school teacher.

He discussed about the arrangements of taking boys out of the campus, effective conduct of Toye time (study hours) and sports activities carried out in a residential school.

During the discussion, participants’ were given a situation as an activity so that they may get a clear understanding of the practices they must learn to adopt.

Class Observations

Executive Vice President started the session by throwing a question to the participants

“What are the advantages of class observation for a teacher?”

The session was interactive. Participants were allowed to share their ideas. Advantages of class observations were told to the participants vis a vis peers, boss and teachers.

She enlightened the participants about the purposes of class observations that is to appreciate the great job a teacher does. It is also to “learn from others and help others learn.”

EVP concluded the session with the tip that both teachers and students must be comfortable with this mutually beneficial practice.

Creative Thinking

The session started with an activity, lead and facilitated by Mr.Khurshid Yousaf and Mr.Ahsan basher.

All the participants worked in groups and discussed the traits of a residential school teacher and presented their ideas. Some of the common traits were

· Polite

· Helpful

· Humble

· Facilitator

Mr.Khurshid after taking the feed back from the participants established the significance of creative thinking through a game in which all the participants were to think creatively to get the solution of the given problem.

This situation cleared that creativity is not a talent rather a skill that is learnt.

He laid importance on aspect of re-visiting the experiences. He explained and discussed that for creativity there are three essentials:

Experience

He culminated the session with the interesting example of apples and ideas to show we must not collect apples but exchange ideas, emphasizing the exchange of ideas so that one may emerge enriched in mind and experience.

Interactive Multimedia Training Session on Spreadsheet

Computer Literacy Skill

Interactive multimedia training session about introduction of spreadsheet skill starting with basic concepts and working with the software interface of spreadsheet was given. File operations, view, editing and formatting, data and Formula features were discussed and presents by taking examples. Advanced formatting , working with cells, range, data, insetting & deleting rows and columns, formula design and implementation, working with headers and Footers, boarders, Bullets and tables were also demonstrated with examples.

Communication Skills (I)

Facilitator built the concept regarding communication skills by taking feedback from the participants.

He asked the participants to think and explain how non-verbal language can be used in its most efficient form, its significance and implication in the real world.

Akram Qalandri, one of the participants expressed his deep and innovative thoughts by the application of a Role-play.

Mr.Ahsan discussed that the communication process involves these important elements;

By concluding the session, he explained that every individual carries his/her own approach to communication. Our own concepts and beliefs effects the way we perceive and communicate to others.

The first part ended on the note by the facilitator for the participants to think the traits of a teacher as an active communicator for the second part of communication skills.

Session started with an exciting activity of persuading the headmaster Mr. Tariq Qureshi to be a part of a particular group.

Both the groups persuaded Mr. Tariq and he decided to be the part of that group from which the responses came with reasoning.

Another activity was performed in which participants were given different situations to persuade their fellows with arguments and emotions. Each group portrayed a Role-play which made the learning environment enjoyable.

At the end participants were shown a video presentation (90/10 principle) to create a relationship between persuation and communication process. This principle is about the attitude of a person. 90

Mr.Nadeem Jaffar introduced the conduct of social service in Chand Bagh School with reference to the vision of Late General Ghulam Jilani. He explained the purpose of Social Service which is to induct practicality of life within students.

Mr.Aamir.S.malik briefed the participants about various clubs under whom activities are carried out.

The day started with the visit and observation of Morning Assembly of Chand Bagh school. The Headmasters and all Daanish faculty arrived at open air theatre at 7:45 am and viewed the complete school assembly.

Health and Hygiene

Executive vice president explained about the provision of health facilities to cbstians and to employees. Procedural implications of medical treatment of borders at house level and record keeping at CBS Health center were briefed to the trainees.

Worthy EVP explained three types of health so as to make the Daanish staff and Headmasters to be aware of Emotional and chemical health risks as with structural health.

She emphasized the Headmasters to have a complete medical examination of all students coming to Daanish schools.

Mrs.Shama Aleem gave further details about some of the health tips at the closing stage of the session.

Leadership and Emotional Intelligence

Mr.Khursheed told a story to have some feedback from the trainees to point out the traits of a Leader. After the activity each group gave the feedback, which was quite similar to the feedback that was given on Day I while narrating the qualities of a teacher.

The facilitator explained and discussed that think of a problem as opportunity. He emphasized that re-visiting the thoughts and beliefs starts self-improvement.

This Interactive multimedia training session is on the use and application of spreadsheet computer literacy skill. This session was also supplemented by a complete application and scenario based assignment in which skill knowledge and expertise can be used and implemented.

File operations, view, editing and formatting, data and Formula features were discussed and presented by taking examples. Advanced formatting, working with cells, range, data, insetting & deleting rows and columns, formula design and implementation, working with headers & footers, boarders, Bullets and tables were also demonstrated with examples.

Special emphasis was placed on formula design and implementation and on graphics.

It was a comprehensive interactive skill development session in which audience participation was ensured in order to learn while attending the session. Implementation of the concepts was done by taking on-spot scenario based related examples.

Communication is a nonstop and incessant process. A person communicates with one self (Intra-personal communication) and with others (Inter-personal communication). A special emphasis was laid on Communication skills of the participants in the Training Programme. During this session the facilitators chalked out the importance of this process and elaborated its tools and techniques. All the participants were asked to list down the barriers which hampers their communication process (speaking, writing, listening, and reading).

Mr.Afzal explained the Importance of writing skills that is to speak the Target language so as to take hold of written skills. He told that prime and foremost activity for speaking English is to” Listen”.

Emphasis was given to a classroom situation where a teacher should play a role-model. He/she should use the Target language (L1) to present him/herself as a model for listening.

Importance was also given to Reading which enhances the ability to achieve the desirable results in writing a draft.

Briefing on Professional aspects

A session for briefing on professional aspects of the Punjab Daanish Schools was held under the supervision of the Headmasters of Rahimyarkhan, Hasilpur and Chistian campuses. The aim was to establish rapport with the staff. All available teachers participated. It was highlighted that Daanish Schools were new institutions and the rules for their functioning were in the making. Some basic regulations would be available shortly to commence activities. It was stressed that in the intial phase of the schools,, a lot of hardwork and dedication would be required on part of the teachers. Leaves are to be curtailed to emergencies. A draft weekly menu for the students’ mess was presented before the teachers and their inputs were solicited. Other significant points covered were functioning as a family and team, preparations for the arrival of students and optimum use of ongoing course. It was told that residence of the Headmaster could only be visited under exceptional circumstances. It was announced that the next session with the Headmaster would be on Academic matters.

Conduct of Classes in Chand Tara school

Time tables were given to the female staff of Daanish schools one day prior to the conduct of classes and were categorized according to their subjects. Respective Headmasters briefed their staff vis-à-vis their quarries regarding the class conduct. They explained the attributes that they want to see in their teachers.

On Tuesday 26^th October, 2010 female staff of Daanish schools arrived at Chand Tara School at 8:00 am. They went for the conduct of their respective classes and were observed by the Respective Headmasters of Daanish schools and Heads of department of Chand Bagh & Chand Tara School.

The female faculty of Daanish schools was given an after observation counseling session on their performance in the class by the observers. It was suggested by the observers that one more session may be arranged for the faculty to see the improvement/progression in their teaching methodologies.

All the observations have been recorded.

D,C.O (Rahim yar Khan) visited ChandBagh School to meet up the trainees. He informed them about the development that has taken place in both the campuses of Rahim yar Khan. The trainees gave him a very positive feedback regarding the training session carried out in ChandBagh School.

Reflective Practice and Personal Development

Executive Vice president linked Reflective Practice with Lesson Plans and class observations. She explained that now Reflective Practice is recognized as self-evaluation process about teaching strategies in and out side the class.

She elaborated the process of reflective practice that is to gather information/collect data from an authentic source, secondly keeping a reflective diary in which teacher can jot down the objectives achieved or not.

Emphasis was given on reading and research methods to set new patterns and self discoveries.

She suggested that teachers can maintain a teaching portfolio to track their achievements so that revisiting those materials teachers can appraise their personal development.

An activity was given at the end to write reflective notes regarding the same session.

Comprehension Skills

Reading and Listening, the receptive skills, come in to play for comprehension of written and oral expressions. It is significant on part of teachers to prepare the lessons for the said activities. The trainers were apprised of the pre-reading activities like starting the purpose, setting a task and introducing sub skills like scanning, skimming and inferring meanings out of the given context. Later on post-reading activities like the accomplishment of the set task and other related activities were carried out. The importance of extensive reading was highlighted in the assimilation of vocabulary and the structure of the language.

A session for briefing on academic aspects of the Punjab Daanish Schools was held under the supervision of the Headmasters of RahimYarKhan, Hasilpur and

Chistian campus. The aim was to have on board all the stakeholders. The Daanish School teachers participated. The significant points covered were Project Based Learning, Improvement of English, Commencement of Academic Activities, and Initial Testing & identification of weak areas. This would set the chain of Daanish Schools on the path of excellence.

Writing Skills (II)

Mr.Afzal asked the participants to re-visit the stages of Writing through brain storming. He recommended that all should speak English to improve the written draft. Participants were asked to tell the problems while attempting to write. Some of the general problems were

· Lack of vocabulary

· Lack of Self-confidence

· Improper Grammatical structures

He explained that in a classroom situation students should be provided with a secure environment before they start writing any thing. Three stages of writing were also elucidated to the participants.

He suggested that as teachers we have to be mindful of all these stages. Errors are bound to happen; we have to encourage students so we may put off rote-learning.

Worthy EVP explained the essentials of lesson plan. She told that lesson plan is a framework of how a topic is taught to the students in a classroom. She elaborated that detail of a plan may vary according to the preference of the teacher, but the foremost thing is that purpose/objective of a lesson plan should be filled.

She explained that while there are many formats for a lesson plan, most lesson plans must contain some of these elements

This interactive multimedia training session is on the use and application of presentation computer literacy skill. This session was also supplemented by a complete application and scenario based assignment in which skill knowledge and expertise can be used and implemented.

Introduction of presentation software skill starting with basic concepts and working with the software interface of presentation software was given. Basic layout of a slide with areas on which text, formatting and editing can be done was presented. File, view, editing, formatting, view, insetting & deleting slides and slide operations were presented in detail and demonstrated with examples.

Special emphasis was placed on action setting, animation, bullets, numbering, alignment of text and graphics on a slide, date and time operations, header and footer setting and slides presentation and view operations.

This Interactive multimedia training session is on the use and extensive practice on the design, testing and implementation of activity based and task oriented functions of spreadsheet. This session was also supplemented by a complete application and scenario based assignment in which skill knowledge and expertise can be used and implemented.

Advanced formatting, formula design and implementation was discussed and implemented by taking specific student assessment problem in any examination. Most of the delivery contents and implementation points revolved around this concept.

It was a comprehensive interactive multimedia training session in which vast ranges of example we re taken which were specific and application/task oriented. Examples were implemented in the same multimedia session before the audience with their entire participation.

At the end, it was announced that all the audience are now capable to computerize their class assessment and examination result using spreadsheet skill.

VALUING DIFFERENCES

This interactive session started with the narration of a story in order to enhance understanding of the participants about the topic. ‘Valuing differences’ is very important for maintaining harmony and encouraging creativity. It was learnt that when we learn to appreciate one another’s’ differences, we become more willing to listen, more open to new ideas and more eager to grow.

Afterwards, two activities were conducted in the training session. One, interpretation of a story of The Fox and the Stork. And second, lesson learning from a team, solving a puzzle. It was found that job could have not been done without team work and without coordination outside your primary group. Participants overlooked their differences for a Common Good.

All the participants were divided into teams and were given tasks. Then they were asked to mention what have they learnt from it. In this way importance of team building was highlighted.

Flipcharts were distributed among participants to write the recipe of a good Team and then their inputs were discussed. Ingredients were

· Effective decision systems and communication of work procedures

· Good personal relationship

Barriers to Team-building were elucidated at the end of the session; e.g.

Head of Activities explained the participants about the cultural activities organized in Chand Bagh School. He showed the participants some clips from drama nights held in Chand Bagh school to make them aware of the hard work that has to put in for the success of any activity.

Mr.Junaid briefed the participants about various activities carried out under Cultural wing of CBS.

Mr. Tariq Qureshi presented “Vision Statement” and Mr.Mujhaid Hussain presented “Mission Statement” before the facilitators and the Daanish Staff. Mr. Yaseen Mirza took feedback from the participants and facilitators to modify the Vision & mission statements if necessary.

After the Headmasters, the participants presented on various topics as groups. Some of the topics were:

The activity done was multi-purpose that was to learn, share and apply the things which have been learnt during the workshop, which includes involvement of all team building steps, successful communication to the audience, respect for all and protection of ones’ own dignity.

Dealing with Difficult Children & Alternative Punishment

EVP elucidated various situations to the participants and took their feedback regarding these situations. The participants were asked to suggest alternative punishments for these situations.

Dr. Seema told the participants how to take the history of the student which would help in identifying the real problems.

At the end of the session participants were given handouts.

Pronunciation I

A very informative session was facilitated by Mr.Mujahid Hussain regarding Pronunciation. Language was discussed followed by two other aspects of language which are Listening and speaking. Importance of pronunciation was imparted to the participants. A poem was given to the participants to recite to pick up the correct pronunciation of some---- words.

Difference between accent and pronunciation was also told. They were asked to repeat the sounds after the British pronunciation.

Mr Junaid Ali conducted the session on English for specific occasions/ situation based communication. A social tool kit comprising greetings, common ground and deeper discussion was developed in order to continue conversation in various possible situations. Furthermore, pet responses to various greetings were discussed interactively. The’ Back channeling’ was another Interesting part to encourage the speaker to continue talking. In the end the participants imagined various situations in which they might find themselves face to face with the students and developed possible dialogue with a student imaginatively.

Director Sports discussed the objectives and importance of sports for a child. Sports not only help in physical growth and fitness but also provide an opportunity of self-expression, development of character, tolerance and spirit of self-sacrifice.

Sports have been given same weightage in foreign countries as to other fields and subjects. To promote cooperation and work for a common good with the help of Team-building are imperative aspects of sports.

In addition to the teaching responsibilities, a teacher in a boarding school has been delegated with other duties as well. One of these includes duty of MoD and PPT. Master/Mistress on Duty (MoD) is a special envoy of a principal for the appointed day who needs to be vigilant all the time and is responsible to supervise and monitor the following;
